Established as the philanthropic arm of Turtle Bay in 2012, the Turtle Bay Foundation is dedicated to strengthening our Koʻolauloa and North Shore communities by supporting scholastic, cultural and environmental education. Since 2012, the Foundation has donated over $1 million in funds to several local organizations, including: North Shore Community Land Trust, Kupu, Friends of Kahuku Library, Waialua Robotics Program, Hale‘iwa Main Street, Hawai‘i Marine Mammal Alliance and Sustainable Coastlines, and over 50 elementary, intermediate and high schools.
Since 2015, Turtle Bay Resort has partnered directly with the State of Hawai’i to provide members of the Kahuku High School Golf Team access to the highly rated Turtle Bay Resort Golf Courses during the O’ahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) golf season for their practice.
Host Hotels & Resorts and Areté Collective are proud supporters of the North Shore Community Land Trust. The mission of the North Shore Community Land Trust is to protect, steward and enhance the natural landscapes, cultural heritage and rural character of ahupuaʻa (land divisions) from Kahuku (Oʻahu’s northernmost point) to Kaʻena (Oʻahu’s westernmost point).
Turtle Bay Resort proudly serves as the host venue for the annual Panina Makahiki, a vibrant celebration rooted in ancient Hawaiian traditions. Held on the resort’s West End lawn and organized by Nurture Cultivate Inc. (NCI Hawaiʻi) in partnership with Nā Leo Kākoʻo o Koʻolauloa, this community-led event honors the season of Lono through traditional Hawaiian games, ceremonies and cultural demonstrations. Makahiki fosters intergenerational learning, supports Hawaiian Language Immersion Programs and provides a platform for local practitioners—including weavers, farmers and lomilomi experts—to share ancestral knowledge. By supporting this event, Turtle Bay helps create a welcoming space for cultural exchange, community pride and the perpetuation of Hawaiian traditions on the North Shore.
Host Hotels & Resorts and Areté Collective are proud to be part of the North Shore community and are committed to supporting its long-term well-being. As part of their stewardship, both landowners actively invest in local programs that celebrate and sustain the region’s rich cultural heritage, natural environment, and educational opportunities. In addition, both landowners remain dedicated to providing the community benefits outlined in the 1986 Unilateral Agreement.
Public Parks:
The Turtle Bay Resort intends to dedicate two parks to the City and County of Honolulu, and two parks will be privately owned and maintained. A series of public access easements along the shoreline will connect both City and County of Honolulu parks. Areté Collective will oversee necessary improvements for dedication.
Shoreline Access, Public Restrooms, and Public Parking:
A series of pedestrianway easements to and from the shoreline will enhance public access to the coastline. Many of these shoreline and pedestrianway easements have already been completed allowing residents and visitors to access and enjoy the shoreline more easily. Future easements will also provide access to new public restroom facilities and public parking.
Conservation:
One of the undedicated parks will be located adjacent to the shoreline, and the other will be situated adjacent to the Punaho’olapa Marsh, both will be publicly accessible. With guidance from the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Host Hotels & Resorts will oversee improvements to the Punaho’olapa Marsh will also be made, thereby enhancing the marsh’s ecosystem.
Jobs:
There will also be many employment opportunities, both at the hotel and related to the development. The existing Ritz-Carlton O’ahu, Turtle Bay hotel will continue to employ many North Shore residents. There are a number of initiatives that have been implemented and will be introduced that are intended to assist with job placement for local and regional residents. Once construction occurs, there will be many new full-service hotel units which will expand the number and types of resort-related job opportunities.
Childcare:
A childcare center will be established to further support current and future Turtle Bay Resort employees. Host Hotels & Resorts will be responsible for providing or purchasing the land for the center, and Areté Collective will oversee the construction of the facilities.
Low-Moderate Income Housing:
Currently, Host Hotels & Resorts intends to exclusively develop hotel units on H-1. Other projects such as the current development by Guest Developer, Areté Collective, on RR-3 would require the development of low-moderate income housing units, which Areté intends to meet. Any portions of the Turtle Bay Resort developed with dwelling units not a part of a full service hotel operation would require the development of low-moderate income housing units equal to at least 10% of the new dwelling units built.
